Contents of the Treaty
There were 440 articles in the Treaty of Versailles, and 410 of them described Germany's punishment, which can be simplified into four main points. First of all, Germany had to take responsibility for starting the war. It was necessary that Germany accepted the blame because the treaty next called for Germany to pay reparations. Germany had to pay £6,600 million in reparations, or payment for casualties and damage done during the war. Next, the treaty targeted Germany's army and naval forces. They were forbidden to have any submarines or any kind of air force planes. The Navy was all but demolished, the treaty stating Germany could have only 6 battleships, and the army could have no more than 100,000 men. Germany was also forbidden from putting any troops along Rhineland, a demilitarized zone between Germany and France. Last, Germany lost much of their land. (Map Below.)
Germany was also forbidden to join the League of nations or to have join forces with Austria.
