The Start
In 1914, a Serbian nationalist went into Austria-Hungary and shot to death the nephew of the emperor and the heir to the empire. Blaming the Serbian government for the deaths, they were ready to declare war. Austria-Hungary teamed up with Germany while Russia, France, Belgium and Great Britain stood beside Serbia. Within a week, war began.
The Battles
World War I was fought in many different parts and many different ways. Germany made their attacks on two fronts, the Western and Eastern. On August 4th, they started by invading through Belgium towards France in the West and through Russia in the East. The first battle happened in the city of LIege where they used the most powerful weapons and cannons and captured the city on August 15th. They shot many citizens and the Belgium priest. There was much destruction left behind. From September 6-9th, Germany started the attack towards France but the British and French arms made a successful counterattack and pushed Germany away into a trench. For the following three years, this is where the war was fought on the Western front. Both the German and French troops lost close to 1 million casualties. On the Eastern side, Russia planned to attack through German Poland and East Persia but were soon stopped and the Battle of Tannenberg took place. Germany had hoped for a quick victory but with Russia's huge military that didn't happen. Russia pushed Germany back to the Western front. In April of 1915, the Allies invaded the Gallipoli Peninsula. It was a failure and troops lost close to 250,000 causalities. Through the sea Germany didn't make very made attempts to attack due to the strong British and American Naval system. In July of 1918, Germany made their last attempt of an attack but with American help, the allied troops made a successful counterattack and the central powers started dwindling. In November, Germany was forced to surrender after more countries signed with the allies and the war ended.
